Yacht Charter Holidays in the Sporades Islands

The unbeatable combination of gin clear water, great wind and beautiful beaches is proving timeless! With the meltimi blowing heavily during the summer season it's an exciting sailing ground for an experienced crew.

The Sporades Islands lie to the North of Athens, in the Aegean Sea. Amongst other things, they are famous for the regular summer meltemi winds and as the setting for the 2008 ‘Mamma Mia’ movie. The area is also home to the National Marine Park of Alonissos and the endangered Mediterranean Monk Seal.

Where can we sail from in the Sporades Islands?

There is just the one base to sail from in the Sporades Islands. The beautiful, central base of Skiathos Island. Skiathos Harbour is just five minutes from Skiathos Airport where taxis are always ready and waiting. The harbour is located adjacent to the town with it's many restaurants, bars and buzzing promenade. If you are looking for a treat first meal we recommend the Windmill Restaurant, up on the hill with views out over the bay and surrounding islands, just a five minute walk from the main quay.

So, tell me what's the weather and wind like?

This area of Greece is fairly far south, so enjoys a really warm summer, with temperatures reaching up to 35°C in July and August. At the beginning and end of the season (May and October) the temperatures remain warm (generally around 23-25°C). A great area for an early or late season sail!

Prevailing winds are from the north (sometimes NW) providing fantastic sailing conditions and sheltered seas to the south of the islands. Do look out for the Meltemi, which blows heavily during July and August, providing some exhilerating sailing for an experienced crew. We wouldn't recommend the Sporades Islands for an inexperienced crew.

Are there any hidden surprises?

The beauty of sailing in Greece is that you will often find there are no mooring fees when staying on a town quay. If the local port authorities do come along, and ask you to pay, then you can expect no more than €10 for a 40ft yacht.

How can I get there?

Charters in the Sporades Islands are from Friday to Friday to tie in with flights to Skiathos. Thomas Cook Airlines fly to Skiathos from London Stanstead, East Midlands and Newcastle. You can also fly from Manchester, London Luton and London Gatwick with Thomson Airways.
