Where to Find Wind in the South Ionian Islands
If you’ve spent any time sailing in the South Ionian, you’ll know it’s famous for calm seas and light winds. That’s brilliant if you’re a beginner (or if you fancy a lazy lunch at anchor without your boat bouncing about). But if you’re itching to get the sails up, those calm conditions can leave you craving a proper breeze.
So, where do you go to find wind in the South Ionian? Here are our tried-and-tested spots and tips:
1. Wait Until the Afternoon
The prevailing north-westerly tends to kick in between 2–3 pm most days. If you’re desperate to sail, plan a leisurely morning and get moving after lunch.
2. Catch a Katabatic Breeze off Kalamos
Kalamos has steep hillsides, which means katabatic winds often tumble down in the afternoons. Sail relatively close to the island and you might find yourself gliding along nicely while boats further out are still drifting.
3. The Meganisi Channel (Between Lefkada and Meganisi)
This narrow channel is a wind funnel. Even on still days, you can often find a good breeze here. It’s a favourite among crews who’ve been bobbing about elsewhere and are ready for some action under sail.
4. The Kefalonia–Ithaka Channel
This stretch can get properly lively. The prevailing wind funnels directly between Lefkas and Kefalonia, so if you’re sailing from Fiskardo back to Sivota, you’re in for a treat.
5. The South End of Ithaka
Rounding the southern tip of Ithaka? Keep your eyes (and hands) on the sails, because the wind can accelerate as it funnels through. It’s not always predictable, but when it’s good, it’s brilliant — we’ve had some of our best sails shooting across from here to Euphemia.
Final Thoughts
The South Ionian may not be as breezy as the the Saronic or Sporades Islands, but if you know where (and when) to look, there’s more than enough wind to keep your sails full and your crew smiling. Just remember: mornings are for swimming, coffee, and bakery runs… afternoons are for sailing.
