Can You Go on a Flotilla Sailing Holiday With No Experience?

Short answer: yes — you don’t need any sailing experience at all to join a flotilla holiday.
Whether you’re a total beginner or a sailor in training, there’s an option for you. EU regulations do mean that, unless you hold a Day Skipper qualification (or equivalent), you’ll need one of our skippers on board. But don’t worry — that just opens the door to a few different ways of sailing with us.

Option 1: Sail With a Skipper
No experience? No problem. One of our friendly skippers can join you on board.
They’ll take care of the boat.
You can get involved as much (or as little) as you like.
You’ll get local tips — from hidden anchorages to the best harbourside tavernas.
Many people love this option because it’s pure holiday mode: all of the freedom, none of the stress.
You'll also have our lead crew on a separate lead boat. On this boat we have a Skipper, Engineer & Hostess who help the week flow.
Tailored with the support of our Lead Crew when you're on a flotilla sailing holiday
We’re incredibly proud to have some of the best lead crew in the business.
For those who haven’t sailed with us yet, your lead crew are your companions for the week as you explore the Greek Islands. But to call them simply that doesn’t quite do them justice.
They are not bossy tour guides.
They are your calm in the chaos, your backup when something goes wrong, and your steady reassurance when you need it most.
They’re also the ones who somehow disappear into the background the moment you’re happily tied up, cold beer in hand, with everything going just right.
They’re the reason so many of you come back year after year.

Option 2: Learn as You Go
Fancy learning the ropes properly? We run RYA courses out in the Greek islands.
Competent Crew Course – great if you’d like to be useful on board and learn the basics.
Day Skipper Course – the minimum qualification you’ll need to skipper your own yacht.
A popular choice is to do your Day Skipper one week, then set sail with your partner, friends, or family the next. It’s the best way to put your new skills to work straight away (and celebrate them with a cold Mythos at sunset).

Option 3: Skipper Your Own Yacht
If you already hold your Day Skipper qualification (or equivalent), you’re good to go. You can take the helm yourself, sail with your chosen crew, and enjoy the independence of leading your own adventure. Of course, our lead crew is always nearby if you need a hand with mooring or want a weather update.

So, Do You Need Sailing Experience?
Nope. You can:
Kick back with a skipper and let them do the work.
Learn with us and build towards your Day Skipper.
Take the helm yourself once you’re qualified.
Either way, you’ll be part of the flotilla family — sharing stories, sundowners, and the odd dolphin sighting along the way.

Frequently Asked Questions About Sailing Holidays
How long is the Day Skipper course?
The RYA Day Skipper course takes 5 days. Many of our sailors combine it with a flotilla week straight after, to put their new skills into practice.
Can kids join a flotilla sailing holiday?
Yes — families are a huge part of our flotillas. Children of all ages are welcome, and our lead crew are always nearby to lend a hand.
Do I need travel insurance for a sailing holiday?
Yes. Like any overseas trip, travel insurance is essential. Make sure it covers sailing and watersports.
What if I get seasick?
Most flotilla sailing is in sheltered waters, where seasickness is rare. Pack travel bands or tablets just in case, and remember — the motion usually eases after the first day or two.
What’s included in the cost of a flotilla holiday?
Your yacht, lead crew support, and the security of travelling with a group. Extras like fuel, food, and mooring fees are shared among your crew and kept low.
