Sailing Holidays Ltd - Sailing and Flotilla Sailing Holidays in Greece and Croatia
Our Two Week Faraway Islands Cruise

The stunning Faraway Islands are perfect for those of you who have enjoyed our other flotilla routes and are looking for something new. We first explored the route in May 2006 and everyone was very impressed with the area's beauty and the way in which the authentic Greek culture had been preserved. The sailing around this area is similar to the rest of the Ionian Islands except that there is a bit more open water and a few longer stretches. Some sailing experience such as a previous 'Whole Ionian' flotilla would be ideal preparation for taking on the Faraway Islands. This flotilla will consist of our Beneteau 331s and 361s, alongside our brand new Beneteau 323s, as well as a couple of larger yachts - a Beneteau 43.3 and a Bavaria 44. With furling sail systems, bigger engines and several new harbours, the area is just perfect for those wanting some more wind in their sails.

The flotilla begins on the Greek mainland in the picturesque town of Plataria before heading up the island of Corfu to the Diapondia Islands - our 'Faraway Islands'. The Diapondia Island group consists of Othoni, Ericousa and Mathraki. The islands are abundant with olive groves, in particular Othoni, which is clad with heavy bush in the valleys, giving way to rocky scrub on the hill tops that tower above the other islands. With abandoned towns up on the hills and crystal clear waters, the island of Othoni is possibly one of the most beautiful in the Ionian. While all three islands boast beautiful sandy beaches, the most spectacular is found on Mathraki, with its golden sands and transparent water. You can walk up the hill to the top of the island for amazing views out over the harbour and the beach across to the top end of Corfu with its dramatic white cliffs plunging into the sea. Like Othoni, the water here is perfectly clear, making it a great spot for snorkelling.

In addition to the Faraway Islands visited, we will also stop in at various bays around the island of Corfu and along the Greek mainland. Indulge in local prawns at the mainland town of Sayaidha before heading over to Kassiopi on the northern end of Corfu. Kassiopi has not changed much in the last twenty years, retaining its old charm with plenty of little shops to explore and excellent tavernas from which you can sample the local fare. Astrokeri provides a true ethnic experience with its authentic Greek spirit and 'big village' feel. This sheltered harbour boasts lovely walks through paths lined with ancient olive trees. Enjoy spectacular sailing along the rugged and lush coastline of northwest Corfu to Paleokastrista, a bustling town full of fishing and tourist boats. These are almost all new destinations for our flotillas and we have no doubt at all that you will love this route which offers some more exciting sailing for those who have already enjoyed the tranquil cruising around the southern Ionian.

Although the Faraway Islands are perfect for keener sailors, there is still most definitely time to relax. The route we take and the length of time spent in each port will vary according to the weather, but we aim to spend two nights on each of the three Faraway Islands, allowing time to explore by both land and sea. Mornings in this area are usually calmer with light south easterly winds, allowing you to go for a morning wander around the islands or simply lie on a beach or sip a coffee in a local taverna.

The Faraway Islands flotilla is the perfect chance to further explore the Ionian Islands, enjoy lively breezes and experience traditional Greek culture. Come and enjoy this stunning cruising area that will take you off the beaten track and back to Greece as it used to be!
