In addition to a few 'South Ionian Islands flotilla favourites' we head South to the Island of Zakinthos and new places to visit. Our planned route will be sailing from Sivota Bay on Lefkas Island across to Fiskardo, Euphemia or Sami on the first day out. These places will be familiar to everybody, but from then, we will be off the usual chart. Our next overnight stop will be Poros at the bottom end of Kefalonia which is now a very pleasant village since they built a new ferry quay outside the old harbour. Then we cross over to Zakinthos (also known as “Zante”) for a night in Ay. Nikolaos. Generally, we will then sail down the west coast of the island when the weather is suitable so we can see Wreck Bay, nearby Vroma Bay, and the spectacular cliffs of the west coast. Finally, we swing around into beautiful Keri Bay where we can relax for a day in the Emerald waters. This flotilla takes advantage of the wind direction wherever possible. The prevailing wind in the area is West or Northwest but, in the Gulf of Patras, Easterlies can be more common. We’ll be visiting some beautiful places and enjoying some excellent sailing. No two places are the same and overnight stops range from village harbours to coastal towns and an anchorage. Laganas Bay is a beautiful shallow bay, famous for the loggerhead turtles that lay their eggs in the sandy beaches there. It is possible to anchor in the bay and occasionally see turtles with a snorkel and mask. We anticipate having a lazy day here to explore or just relax. As we head North again, during the second week, we will sometimes have a night in busy Zakinthos town where water and supplies are available. Then we sail back to more familiar territory, including the beautiful islands of Kastos and Kalamos and a night in Kioni or Frikes on Ithaca. This cruise will be taking advantage of whichever way the wind is blowing and is being run so that those of you who have not seen Zakinthos before, can in fact do so. We certainly enjoy sailing around this area and are sure that you will too.
