Poros meaning ‘crossing’ is a beautiful island 300 metres from the mainland town of Galatas. It is composed of two islands joined by a narrow strip of land, the smaller one with the main town on. It is a beautiful town composed of whitewashed buildings set high on a hill, with a maze of cobbled side streets to explore. Looking west from Poros at night there is a stunning view of the ‘sleeping lady’, which can be observed out of the shapes in the hillside (with a little imagination) at sunset.
Poros is a classic picture postcard Greek town and is always a highlight of our visits to the area. There is certainly no shortage of things to do once you are in Poros. There are excellent shops and you are sure to find whatever you are looking for. The Poseidon Temple in the centre of the island can be reached by push bikes and scooters, which are readily available for hire and are a great way to explore the rest of the island. It is also possible to do a variety of water sports round at Askeli Bay.
All amenities are available in Poros, including several banks, pharmacies and a post office. There is also an extensive supermarket within 100m from the quay. There is plenty of choice of tavernas in Poros, though a place that we love is Taverna Karavolos, which is up in the side street behind the cinema. You will be sure to have a great night here and the food is superb.
